K1 Music Video Final Project
Your music video must meet the following requirements:
1. Must be 2 - 5 minutes in length
2. You can work in groups but each member within the group needs to make their own video
3. Must be school appropriate
4. Must be entirely shot by 12:45 pm on Monday June 2nd
5. Must be entirely edited before school is out on Tuesday June 3rd
6. Should contain a wide variety of shots from different angles
7. The video can be stop motion, flash animated, or filmed
Here is a Final Cut tutorial that covers many simple techniques that can be used to make your video most excellent:
J1 Green Screen Exercise
For this project you will need to create some basic green screen footage with a video camera. From there you will need to edit the footage within final cut pro X to make it look like you are somewhere else or interacting with digitally added objects. Here is a basic example and tutorial on how to create green screen success:

I1 Flash Stick Fight
We are going to spend about a day on this project just to give you a bit of experience working with Adobe Flash. The project must be set to 15 frames per second and run for 10 seconds. Animation should be as smooth as possible. Here is an excellent yet simple example of what can be done in flash given some time and patience.
Also watch this tutorial for details, flash can be a bit tricky!
This short tutorial will show you how to convert your flash video to quicktime so you can edit it in final cut or post it on YouTube:
H1 Final Cut Kinetic Text
This tutorial shows you how to create animated text projects through final cut pro x. Follow the first video to download a song from youtube.
This video will show you some final cut basics for animating text:
I just added this tutorial to show you how to properly work with images that contain transparency within Final Cut Pro X:
Use this tutorial to export video from Final Cut Pro X, post it to YouTube, and then post your YouTube video on your blog.
G2 Experimental Painting
Find a contemporary artist that interests/influences you.
Post an image from that artist on your blog and write a few sentences about why you chose it. Check out these sites for cool contemporary artists:
Create a digital painting in an experimental style that is influenced by your chosen artist.
G1 Introduction to Corel Painter
Here is a short tutorial for painting an apple in Corel Painter 12. If you have little to no drawing or painting experience that is okay. If you are more advanced with drawing and painting you will be able to really flex your strength in the next project. Watch the tutorial- the apple image is included below the video, now practice painting with Corel:
The tutorial is two parts, the first part is somewhat long, but really shows a lot of little techniques. The second part is really short and just shows the finished product:
Here is the final product:
F1 Design Dream Job
Sometimes as a graphic artist you may need to create images that are simply to pay your bills; still a really fun job! For this project imagine that you are a super hot shot graphic designer and you have just landed a contract to create a skateboard deck design for an awesome skate company, OR a concert gig poster for your favorite musical artist/band. Projects must be created in illustrator, though you can use reference images from the internet. Do not copy an existing design for a deck or poster. You must combine multiple images to create your project: don't just trace one image. Remember compositional rules! Both projects should include use of the gradient tool. Here is a new tutorial on how to use the gradient tool:
Gig posters should be 11" x 17"
Gig posters should include informational text
Here are some cool examples of gig posters and skateboard deck designs:

E2 Bleach Stencils
We are going to create a stencil design for a t-shirt that is a logo or small graphic that advertises a great quality about ourselves. These will be done on a black or dark colored T-Shirt. Start bringing in shirts now. We will all get our stencils done and then get a little messy in another classroom as a group. Here is a cool example of one:
Here is a tutorial on the process:
E1 Logo Spoof Stencil
For this project you will be required to research a corporation that may have caused some problems in society. Look at their corporate logo and think about ways that you could alter it to be a form of critique regarding the social issue they are connected with. Then create Photoshopped alteration of the logo. Next you need to bring your Photoshopped image into Illustrator and trace it with the pen tool. Be sure to include bridges and islands so the stencil works when you cut it out. Finally you will cut it out and spray paint through the stencil. Here is an example of the stencil created in illustrator:

D2 Illustrator Project
Find a cool image off of the internet of a reasonably complex thing: an animal, car, house, person's face, etc... Then use the strategies learned in the Illustrator Practice lesson D1 to complete the drawing over the top of your found image. This project should include much more detail and layers of color/value than the violin.
D1 Illustrator Practice
Trace the violin image for practice. Follow the tutorial to learn how to use the pen tool:

C3 Light Graffiti
By using a long exposure time in a dark environment you can paint into the air. You will be expected to create multiple images of light graffiti. This takes some experimentation and some teamwork.

C2 Truth in Advertising
At this point you should be fairly well equipped to use many basic Photoshop techniques. This is a full blown project where you will now use your techniques to create a satirical piece of artwork. Advertisements are often very misleading. Study the examples below closely to get a good understanding of the project.
- Step 1: Find an advertisment image out of a real magazine.
- Step 2: Scan the image and copy it onto your desktop.
- Step 3: Create a visual analysis and description of how the advertisement uses (often) imagery to convey meaning.
- Step 4: Create a Photoshopped spoof of the advertisement; show what the advertisement might be like if it were being truthful. keeping in mind our discussion on intellectual property, appropriation and plagiarism: you must change the image at least 50%. If you would like to use a camera to take pictures that is great.
- Make sure to use that refine edge tool with your selections!
C1 Uploading Images to Your Blog
Uploading images from Photoshop to your Blogger page is fairly easy. First, always save your file as a Photoshop formatted file so it maintains high quality and separate layers. Photoshop format files don't work on Blogger though, so you must also "Save as" a JPEG formatted image. Then simply click the little picture button next to "link". "Choose upload" and then "add selected." Always add a title as well.
B3 Using the Type Mask Tool and Layer Styles
Your assignment is to follow this tutorial. Find an image and use
This is an example of what you can do with the type mask tool. Use some words that match with the image like I did here. It's a pretty cool way to make text look unique.:
Here is a basic tutorial for using the type mask tool and layer styles. You will be expected to utilize these techniques in your projects in the future.
B2 Creating a Pop Art Piece
Requirements: use 3 different photos of yourself to create a pop art self-portrait. Make it an interesting composition that includes movement and contrast. This are a few examples from Mr. Brandt.
